We are often asked, “why Iowa?” As strangers to the state with no familial ties to the area, we certainly understand the question. In the summer of 2022, our family decided to move from our home in Washington State and relocate to a quiet corner of Southeast Iowa. After selling our businesses and taking some time to rest, our prayers led us to pack up everything and head out to a previously unfamiliar part of the country.

For almost two decades, our family owned and operated Northwest Coffee Supply. As a busy foodservice distribution company surrounded by such giants as Starbucks, Amazon, and Microsoft, our business grew to encompass thousands of customers across multiple states. With the later acquisition of One Cup Coffee Co., we expanded our operation to include award winning coffee roasting. By continuing the mission of the original founder, this additional division (in partnership with World Vision) raised more than 3 million dollars in financial aide to struggling communities around the world.

Our new Midwest home has provided us with some much needed time to reconnect, recoup and do a little traveling. As we made new friends and established roots in the local community, we soon felt called to give back by creating something special everyone could share. So was born By the Hearth Bookshop and Coffeehouse, a place where old friends can meet and new friends are discovered. It is our hope and prayer that our little business will be a blessing to those who enter and encourage the continued growth of Bloomfield and surrounding communities.
